Ford SOHC Timing Belts

We offer Gates timing belts for all three timing gear options used on the Ford 2300 & 2.5L based engines.

Ford square tooth on OBD1 (Pre-1994) blocks - 129 tooth

Ford round tooth on OBD1 (Pre-1994) blocks - 129 tooth

Ford round tooth on OBD2 blocks (1994-up) - 131 tooth

Esslinger "Wide Round" tooth on OBD1 (Pre-1994) blocks - 155 tooth

The Ford round tooth and Esslinger "Wide Round" tooth profiles are totally different so the belts and gears can not be interchanged.  An easy way to identify which belt you need is to count the teeth on your cam or crank gears.  The Ford round tooth belt works on gears that have 19 teeth on the crank, and 38 teeth on both the cam and intermediate shaft.  The Esslinger "Wide Round" tooth belt works on gears that have 23 teeth on the crank, and 46 teeth on the cam and intermediate shaft.  Another difference between these two belts is the width of the gears they work on.  The Ford round tooth runs on gears that are approximately 1.130" wide, and the Esslinger "Wide Round" tooth belt requires gears that are about 1.300" wide!  The Ford round tooth belts come in 2 different lengths.  The most common Ford round tooth fits OBD1 engines (pre-1994), and has 129 teeth, and the OBD2 blocks (1994-up) require a 131 tooth belt.

For those customers looking for stronger than stock timing belt options, Gates offers Kevlar version of the Ford round tooth belt that is 3mm wider than stock, and the Esslinger "Wide Round" belt offers improved strength through it's 36% wider construction than stock!
