How to set cam timing on a Duratec with the timing tool set

By Esslinger Engineering - 25/10/2026 - 0 comments

Guessing at cam timing is how a good Duratec build turns into a bad one. A cam and crank tool set removes the guesswork. Here is how the job goes.

This guide covers setting cam and crank timing on a four-cylinder Duratec (2.0L, 2.3L and 2.5L) or Mazda MZR port injected engine using our timing tool set. Direct injected engines use a different tool set. For torque values and procedures specific to your engine, follow the service manual.

What the tools are

The tool set has a crank TDC tool and a cam alignment tool. They are precision machined from US-sourced steel to a tolerance of plus or minus .001". Looser tools allow slight variances in cam or ignition timing. You can also buy the crank TDC tool and the cam alignment tool separately.

Tools and parts

  • Duratec/MZR cam and crank timing tool set
  • Ratchet and socket set, torque wrench
  • Service manual for your engine
  • New timing components and gaskets as required

Steps

  1. Get access. Remove the valve cover and anything blocking the front timing cover and the cam ends.
  2. Find top dead center. Rotate the engine by hand to top dead center on number 1 and lock the crankshaft in that position with the crank TDC tool.
  3. Lock the cams. Fit the cam alignment tool to the cam slots so both camshafts are held in their timed positions.
  4. Install or adjust the timing drive. With the crank and cams held by the tools, fit the new timing components or set the cam gears, then tighten them as the manual says.
  5. Remove the tools. Take out the cam alignment tool and the crank tool.
  6. Turn it over by hand. Rotate the engine two full revolutions by hand, then check that the tools drop back into place at top dead center. If they do not, the timing has moved and you need to repeat the setup.
  7. Put it back together. Refit the valve cover and front cover with new gaskets and tighten to the manual.

When this matters most

Any time you change cams or timing parts on an engine you are building, or after a repair. It also pays on swaps: see our Duratec and EcoBoost swap guide.
