Adjustable cam pulley for a Ford 2300 SOHC: when you need one and what it does

Cam timing is free horsepower, but only if you can change it. Here is when an adjustable cam gear is required, and what advancing or retarding the cam actually does.
A fixed cam gear puts the camshaft at one position and that is that. An adjustable gear lets you move the cam a few degrees either way, so you can set it where the engine makes the most useful power.
When you need one
Anytime an aftermarket cam is fitted, or if the block and/or head has been milled (resurfaced). Both change where the cam sits relative to the crank, and the only way to put it back is an adjustable gear.
What the adjustment does
The Esslinger "Star" adjustable cam gear is lightweight and lets you advance or retard the cam by plus or minus 10 degrees.
- Advancing the cam typically moves the power band down in the RPM range slightly. That helps a car or truck accelerate away from a stop or off the corner. Most cast iron Ford SOHC engines tend to like 3 to 4 degrees of advance for the best all-around performance.
- Retarding the cam typically moves peak horsepower up in the RPM range, so the engine can carry its power farther.
Pick the right gear
We make the round adjustable cam pulley and the square tooth version. They go with a matching belt and crank gear: see our round tooth pulley kit, which includes the cam gear, intermediate gear, crank gear and belt.
